When the railroad reached Dillon in 1880, the town became a major shipping hub, forwarding freight to the towns beyond the tracks. There were four major forwarding companies in Dillon, which handled passengers as well as freight. These were Sebree, Ferris, and Holt; W. M. Rank; J. B. Meredith; and John W. Lovell. Later Rank sold to B. F. White, who eventually became Dillon’s first mayor.

Thirty years after the railroad came to Dillon, freight was still being forwarded by wagon. This freight wagon at the corner of Helena and Montana Streets is heading out to Bannack in 1910; this building today is the Club Bar.
